The Christine Ray Richard Award

George Crutcher, a beloved member of the Randolph community, is the most recent recipient of the Christine Ray Richard Outstanding Service Award.

The annual Faculty/Staff Holiday Breakfast included the announcement of the 2019 winner of the Christine Ray Richard Award, George Crutcher, who has spent nearly 30 years in service to Randolph School. Interim Head of School Jerry Beckman made the following remarks at the presentation, which were followed by a thunderous standing ovation and hugs from George's wife, Betty, and one of their daughters:

"The Christine Ray Richard Outstanding Service Award is given annually in honor of Christine Richard for her lifetime of devotion to Randolph School. The honoree is not an alumnus or student, but someone who, like Christine, spent 15 or more years in service of Randolph School.

"Little did we know in early 1991, when George Crutcher joined Randolph School, the difference he would make in the life of our community. Originally hired as a part-time member of the maintenance staff, George was responsible for the evening security check and lock-up of the buildings, and by the end of 1992, George was on staff full-time. From the beginning, George has been a consistent, kind and generous member of the Randolph family.

"George Edwards, Head of School 1991-1997 wrote to George, 'Once again, I want to tell you what a superb job you do at Randolph. I hear various reports, from faculty and other administrators, about your charming ways and your eagerness in getting jobs done. I certainly appreciate your willingness to tackle almost any task and your cheerfulness. You are a greatly respected member of this community, and it is a great pleasure to work with you.'

"Former Head of School John McGee wrote, 'The quality of our work with students and our relationship with parents depends heavily upon our ability to tend to operational tasks outside of the classroom and in support of our mission. We are very fortunate to have support and administrative staff who tend so professionally to the management of the School’s day-to-day operation. The quality of your work, your commitment and your positive attitude are respected and appreciated.'

"Byron Hulsey, Head of School at Randolph from 2006-2014, tweeted last May, 'Just a fantastic day here catching up with George and Betty Crutcher and being able to attend the evening ordination of Polly Robb as deacon in the Episcopal Church at St. Thomas in Huntsville.' Clearly a highlight of Dr. Hulsey’s brief visit to Huntsville was seeing George and Betty.

"For nearly 30 years, George has emulated the service of a true gentleman and remains the bright spot in everyone’s day."

"For nearly 30 years, George has emulated the service of a true gentleman and remains the bright spot in everyone’s day. George remains calm and supportive in any setting, and in schools, that can be a huge asset. He greets everyone daily with a genuine smile and hug to brighten your day.

"It is fitting that this award is being presented to Mr. Crutcher as Mrs. Christine Richard relied on his assistance and service for many of her last years. As her mobility declined and she was dependent on a wheelchair, Mrs. Richard always requested that George be by her side. She loved him and knew his heart was always in the right place. It is with great pleasure that I present the 2019 Christine Richards Service Award to George Crutcher."
