Simpson holds undergraduate degrees in sociology and education and a master’s degree in library and information science. She joined the faculty at Randolph School in 1975. Prior to that, she taught at Huntsville Achievement School and at the elementary school level.

Simpson is a member of Beta Phi Mu, an international library and science honor society, and the American Library Association. She was the 1999 recipient of Randolph's Lynch Faculty Award, the 2000 Ester G. Edwards Elementary Teacher Award, and the 2001 American Association of Independent Schools Distinguished Service Award.

She and her husband, Bill Simpson, owner of Foam Applications, Inc., have two children: Dr. Tory Green and Ryan Simpson, both Randolph School graduates.
