Bernick holds a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree in education from Vanderbilt University, where he was the assistant director of bands for four years. His teaching experience, private instruction and in academic settings, extends back to 1998. He is a proficient percussionist, guitarist, saxophonist, singer, composer, and conductor, and a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), the National Association for Music Educators (MENC), the National Band Directors Association (NBA), and the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA).

His wife, Laura, is a kindergarten teacher at Randolph School.
