Randolph School’s Middle School Interim program is a unique part of our commitment to the comprehensive education of each student. This week long program allows students to explore opportunities outside of the classroom and actively participate in hands-on, experiential education.
Each year the seventh grade enjoys a very exciting on-campus "Interim" program during the month of March. Instead of the usual academic courses, students participate in fun classes that are designed to teach life skills. Every student takes the core courses and chooses two electives from several offerings. One of the most popular core classes is the famous cooking course where students make omelets, pizza, cookies, and French crepes. The renowned sewing course is another core class as each student cuts out, pins and sews their own apron. Rounding out the required courses is the ever-popular ballroom dancing class, and a course on basic home repairs. From learning the waltz to discovering how to change a tire or the oil in a car, students always take home with them new skills and knowledge. The "elective" classes vary from year to year with the spring of 2004 offering Raku (fired ceramics), Screen Printing, Improvisational Drama, Table Tennis, and Classic Games. All of 7th grade interim is taught on campus from 8:10 - 3:10 daily and students experience a rotating schedule during the week. It is a wonderful Interim week for the seventh graders, and the students always enjoy the experience!
Meanwhile, the eighth grade travels off-campus during Interim week to the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, North Carolina. The NOC runs an outstanding outdoor program that allows students to meet physical challenges and assume leadership roles. The activities include whitewater rafting for everyone and a choice among a ropes challenge course, guided mountain biking, alpine tower, and canoeing. Randolph Middle School faculty members chaperone the students, along with hand-picked Randolph Upper School counselors and adult staff provided by NOC. This is a splendid trip and a special bonding time for the class, just ask any Upper School student! By the way, the food is great!
